AMC Theaters, Looking for Movies, Turns to Blumhouse
  + stars: | 2024-03-15 | by ( Brooks Barnes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
For five days starting on March 29, people who buy tickets to certain movies at certain AMC Theaters will see video messages starring … Jason Blum? It’s a long way from Nicole Kidman, whose breathy “We come to this place for magic” branding spot has become legend. But Mr. Blum, a horror film producer, has been working to build his entertainment company, Blumhouse, into more of a consumer-facing brand. AMC and Blumhouse, which has made more than 200 horror movies and shows, are teaming up for what they are calling the Halfway to Halloween Film Festival. Previously released Blumhouse horror movies, including “Split,” “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” “The Purge,” “The Invisible Man” and “Insidious,” which will have its 13th anniversary on April 1, will be on offer in 100 AMC theaters in 40 cities.

NEW YORK (AP) — Taylor Swift's blockbuster concert film “The Eras Tour” will make its streaming debut on Disney+, the Walt Disney Co. announced Wednesday. The film, now titled “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version)" will land on the streaming platform March 15. “The Eras Tour” amassed more than $262 million worldwide in theaters after opening in October, setting a record for concert films. Swift partnered with AMC Theaters for the release in a first-of-its-kind deal that cut out Hollywood studios and instead sent the film directly into theaters. “The Eras Tour” film will hit Disney+ about a month before Swift's recently announced new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” drops on April 19.

“I have nothing to prove to anyone at this point,” she says. Though Beyoncé made a posed appearance at the Oct. 11 premiere of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” — like that concert documentary, “Renaissance” will be distributed by AMC Theaters — she entered her own premiere only after the lights had been turned off and the movie was seconds away from beginning. Unlike Swift, who shares plenty about her life and is currently in a high-profile, well-documented romance with the N.F.L. player Travis Kelce, Beyoncé is one of our most private superstars. “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” which chronicles the most recent world tour in support of her seventh studio album, offers fans something new to interpret, pulling back Beyoncé’s curtain ever so slightly.

AMC beats quarterly revenue estimates on 'Barbenheimer' boost

REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 8 (Reuters) - AMC Entertainment (AMC.N) beat third-quarter revenue estimates on Wednesday, riding on the success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" movies as volumes of theatrical releases also improved at the box office. Attendance in AMC theaters increased 38.4% to 73,576 in the third quarter. The movie theater chain posted revenue of $1.41 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with estimates of $1.26 billion, according to LSEG data. "For both revenue and adjusted EBITDA, these were AMC's most successful third-quarter results in our company's entire 103-year history," Aron added. AMC's profit per share stood at 8 cents, compared with estimates of a loss of 19 cents per share.

More was riding on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a historical crime drama about a string of murders against the Osage nation in the early 1920s. “Killer of the Flower Moon” also marks the best wide-release debut for a film from a streaming company. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, said of the “Killers of the Flower Moon” launch. As dissimilar as “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” are, they’re alike in their extended run times. “Killers of the Flower Moon" also reeled in more young moviegoers than one might have expected.

But “The Eras Tour” heralds something new and potentially game-changing in the movie industry. BTS earlier this year released a concert film, with higher ticket prices and limited showtimes. But “The Eras Tour” could be the start of an expansion of what, exactly, a movie theater can be. The movie, directed by Sam Wrench, would be a way for millions more to experience the Eras Tour. “The industry needs it and, frankly, so do consumers.”Meanwhile, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is poised to become the biggest concert film ever in about two days of release.

Shares of AMC (AMC) surged 11.5% in Friday afternoon trading after the movie theater chain announced that “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film had grossed over $100 million in advance ticket sales. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” already the most profitable concert film in history, opens on Friday, October 13. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” also broke an AMC record for advance first-day ticket sales at $26 million. AMC Theaters Distribution, along with sub-distribution partners Variance Films, Trafalgar Releasing, Cinepolis and Cineplex, have reached deals with operators to show the film in over 8,500 theaters across 100 countries. The company said in a news release that ticket sales for the Eras Tour film were “setting domestic presale records.”For AMC, the rebound has come after sharp declines over two years.

NEW YORK (AP) — A documentary chronicling Beyoncé's just-concluded 39-city Renaissance World Tour will premiere in North American theaters Dec. 1, AMC Theaters announced Monday. Like “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which debuts Oct. 13, “Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé” is being released directly by AMC, the movie theater chain, without studio involvement. Beyoncé's previous films include the acclaimed 2019 Netflix film “Homecoming," which captured her Coachella performance in 2018. In the deals with AMC, Beyoncé and Swift are both reported to be receiving at least 50% of ticket sales. The film charts Beyoncé's tour on behalf of her 2022 Grammy-winning album “Renaissance.” It mixes concert footage and elements of a visual album while trailing the tour from its launch in Stockholm, Sweden, in May to the finale Sunday night in Kansas City, Missouri.

Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour may be coming to a theater near you. Makers of a concert film based on the smash-hit concert are reportedly in advanced talks to directly distribute the movie through AMC Theaters , according to a Variety report. The news comes as Taylor Swift's own concert film nears its release date of Oct. 13. The movie, based on her Eras Tour, will be globally distributed through AMC and is set to be a blockbuster. First-day ticket sales for Swift's movie got to $26 million and some estimate the film will top $100 million the weekend it opens.

The case for owning stocks over bonds is crumbling
  + stars: | 2023-09-08 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —The allure of owning stocks over less risky investments is at its lowest level in decades, according to one measure, despite the equity market’s race upward this year. At the same time, hot economic data has helped push Treasury yields higher in recent months. Treasury bonds are generally seen as safer investments than stocks, since they’re issued by the US government, which has never defaulted on its debt. One way to calculate that premium is by subtracting the estimated return on nearly risk-free bonds from that of stocks: in this case, the spread between the S&P 500 index earnings yield and 10-year Treasury yield. The bigger question might be: Why did Swift decide to release her highly anticipated film in theaters over a streaming service?

New York CNN —Taylor Swift’s fans know the greatest films of all time were never made, but that could be called into question come October 13, when her Eras Tour concert movie is set for release in North America. Experts say that choosing movie theaters for the Eras Tour film’s debut over the small screen is a move fitting of both Swift’s business acumen and relationship with her fans. Unlike her previous concerts, the Eras Tour has become a cultural phenomenon. Others seemed to have their own reasons for concern about the Eras Tour film release’s timing. The “Exorcist: Believer,” originally scheduled to be released on the same day as Swift’s film, moved it up a week.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, the billion-dollar juggernaut that has dominated the cultural calendar this year, may be on a break before picking up internationally, but its momentum will only rest so long: The show is coming to movie theaters this fall. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film will be released in the United States, Canada and Mexico on Oct. 13, Swift announced on social media Thursday, with U.S. AMC Theaters promising at least four showtimes per day from Thursday to Sunday upon opening. “The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon,” Swift said. “Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged.”Anticipating the white-hot demand that has followed the tour since its announcement, crashing ticketing systems around the world, AMC promised in a news release that it had “bolstered its ticket server capacity to handle traffic at more than 5 times the current record for the most ever tickets sold in an hour.” (The company added, however, that it was “also aware that no ticketing system in history seems to have been able to accommodate the soaring demand from Taylor Swift fans when tickets are first placed on sale.”)

That still may not be enough to save AMC Theaters, which has a looming bill it may not be able to pay back. AMC (AMC) also saw its highest quarterly attendance since 2019. The quarter did not include revenue from “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” July releases, which AMC said lifted the company to its best month in its 103-year history. Still, the financial toll of the pandemic has been immense, and is still weighing down AMC and other movie theater chains. AMC took on a significant amount of debt to stay afloat during the pandemic when theaters closed and customers were at home watching Netflix.

CNN —AMC Theaters (AMC) hit a revenue record last week, driven by the overwhelming success of the “Barbenheimer” pop culture craze. AMC attributed this 103-year high to the incredible opening weekend of both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” as well as the strong momentum that continued to carry them along. “Barbenheimer” had tremendous staying power in its second weekend in theaters, with “Barbie” grossing $93 million and “Oppenheimer” almost $47 million, according to official studio numbers. It reported that 65 AMC locations across 19 states and Washington, DC, set their own box office records this week as well. In its opening weekend, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” had raked in a stunning $162 million domestically in its first weekend, giving the film the biggest opening weekend of 2023 and the largest-ever debut for a female director.

During the movie’s July 4 opening, “Sound of Freedom” scored $11.5 million from direct box office sales and $2.6 million, or over 20%, from Pay It Forward ticket sales. A spokesperson for Angel Studios told CNN that these posts could be tied to group ticket sales. In February, AMC (AMC) said it was rolling out the initiative to all of its roughly 1,000 movie theaters by the end of the year. The company said at the time that AMC theaters would offer three pricing tiers for tickets, with the highest-end “Preferred” tier in the middle of the theaters priced at a “slight premium” compared to its “Standard” tier. That standard tier, it said, would be sold for the “traditional cost of a ticket.” The third “Value” tier would be the lowest-priced tickets for seats in the front row. AMC said it is now pivoting away from Sightline and will not roll it out nationwide. Moving forward, AMC said it’s gearing up to test more spacious front rows, with seats that recline, in theaters nationwide later in the year.

Move over Taylor Swift, summer's hottest ticket is a "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" double feature. AMC Theaters this week announced that more than 20,000 members of its AMC Stubs loyalty program have purchased tickets to watch the unlikely cinematic pairing on the same day. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" have been slated for a July 21 release for the past year. The juxtaposition between the bright and bubbly "Barbie" and the dour, nuclear bomb drama has led internet users to declare "Barbenheimer" a must-see double feature. "I want to see both 'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer,'" Cruise said.

London CNN —Shares in Cineworld plunged more than 30% Monday, hitting their lowest level since late August, after the owner of Regal Cinemas said it planned to terminate efforts to sell its US, UK and Irish businesses. The world’s second-largest movie theater chain also announced a debt restructuring plan with lenders to help it exit bankruptcy. Cineworld — which, like many cinema operators, was hit hard by the pandemic — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September. In addition to the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Cineworld operates cinemas in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Israel. After two rounds of closures in the United States, around 500 Cineworld theaters remain across the country.
New York CNN —AMC Theaters is changing the way it charges for seats. The ticket pricing initiative, called Sightline at AMC, will roll out at all of its roughly 1,000 movie theaters by the end of the year. AMC said a seating map will show the adjusted prices and Sightline will only be used on showings after 4 pm. Live theater, such as Broadway, has long been using a similar method of pricing for seats (although front-row there can fetch top price). Movie theaters outside the United States also have similar location pricing standards that remain uncommon for American movie theaters.
